Been here over 6 months now, so maybe now's a fair point to try and gauge what is good and not so good about the place, while I still possess a slightly objective eye.
Good:
coffee - superb espresso shops around Wellington!
NZ wine - never been much of a fan of whites til I came here (you get some lovely Sauvignon Blancs, Rieslings here).
Uncongested - their idea of a traffic jam is it taking 5 minutes longer than usual to get somewhere.
Sunshine - on a bluebird day, its gorgeous. Strong UV however, so watch out!
Kiwis - not Aussies.
:-)
Bad:
Wind - It isn't windy all the time, but when it picks up its really fierce.
Product Availability - being somewhat cut-off from much of the world means restricted choice on a lot of goods, plus things being more expensive generally.
Work - I still have to.
Interest rates - shine a light they're mad here! The mortgage is well expensive!
TV - sorry, but it is quite poor, even with Sky
Remoteness - this one's a tough call, for some being so far away is good, the downside is the distance from all your family, old friends, as well as the fact you have to fly or sail to reach the next landmass.
Altogether I can see why people settle here, its great for families and adrenalin junkies as well as normal people... :-)

Agree with yur comments. I am Wellington's number one fan, so a little biased. TV is terrible. Worst ever. This could be a good thing though! I had a laugh when I saw the NZ TV awards. They only bloody make about 3 shows! So Bro' Town, Outrageous Fortune and Shortland Street won everything between them.
You can't beat the scenery though. North Island is quite wild and rough around the edges (which I quite like). The South is more stunning, with lakes, mountains, glaciers etc (think Lake District on steriods).
I find the way of life in Welly is like stepping back in time. People are not hung up on what they wear, luxury goods, flash cars and don't really care what the rest of the world thinks (especially the aussies). It's not about 'chasing the $' in Wellington. Anyone who feels like that has moved away to Auckland or Oz.
hey Tezza!
We're off round the South Island in December: when I say 'we' I mean me, Shaz and 'er mother.
Should be fab though, we're taking 2 weeks and driving anti-clockwise taking in all the best stuff.
